How Long Until Umbraco 7's EOL status?

Umbraco 7 is officially at the end of its life cycle!

In July 2021, Umbraco announced that version 7 of Umbraco would enter its final stages on July 31st 2021, with this version of Umbraco moving in to 'security-only' phase. This meant that Umbraco version 7 would only receive patches for severe security issues.

As of September 30th 2023 Umbraco 7 is officially EOL. Therefore this version will no longer recieve official support, security patches, bug fixes, or functionality updates from Umbraco HQ.

While Umbraco 7 CMS websites will continue to function, the fact that this version is EOL means that the risk of security breaches is increased due to unpatched vulnerabilities.

Migration to a supported version of Umbraco (i.e an active release) is therefore recommended - https://umbraco.com/products/knowledge-center/long-term-support-and-end-of-life/

What Does EOL Mean?

EOL stands for End-of-Life, which means what you might be expecting; that a product will no longer be made or supported.

In the context of Software Development, it indicates that the development team will no longer offer support for a specific 'major' version. This means that feature development and maintenance will stop, and in turn mean that no further releases are to be made available by the team behind the product.

Umbraco 7 is officially in its EOL phase, with this being the final stage of an Umbraco versions life cycle. During this phase, no further feature development or bug or regression fixes will be offered.

For most organisations it is important to be aware when a solution is EOL. This is due to EOL status being centred around the security risks that it presents with any vulnerabilities discovered no longer receiving fixes. This can leave your digital solution vulnerable to failure and malicious attacks.

What Will Happen to my Umbraco 7 Website after September 2023?

When Umbraco 7 goes EOL your website/application/solution will not suddenly stop working, in fact you are unlikely to even notice a change.

BUT

Does this mean you dont have to worry about this news?

NO.

Although Umbraco 7 will still be usable after its EOL, it is strongly advised that you upgrade to a support version of Umbraco, this is because continued use of Umbraco 7 will result in security risks, compliance breaches, and a continued lack of new features.

In Conclusion

Umbraco 7 has been great, delivering fantastic value to so many out there, unfortunately, like all good things, its time has come to an end. Fear not, though, because moving on to the latest version of Umbraco is a real treat that's worth your while!

Sticking with Umbraco 7 after its EOL could result in some serious issues. You could be leaving yourself open to security risks, compliance breaches, and worst of all, missing out on some truly epic new features!

So, it's time to say goodbye to our dear old friend, Umbraco 7, and say hello to your shiny new Umbraco. It's time to upgrade and have some serious fun!
