Connecting Wessex Internet to a Future Proof Website

About Wessex Internet

Wessex Internet is an internet service provider dedicated to delivering high-speed broadband to rural communities across Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Somerset.

When they first approached us, they were a new client grappling with frustrations from their previous agency. Their concerns weren’t just minor inconveniences but operational roadblocks that held back their online performance. A lack of communication and unresolved support tickets left their Umbraco website in a less-than-optimal state.

Our Collaboration with Wessex Internet

At the top of their concerns was the website’s functionality. As their main stakeholder in revenue generation, their website's underperformance meant an increased risk of losing leads and also long-term impacts on customer engagement. The misalignment between their website and Salesforce meant potential leads were slipping through the cracks.

From an SEO perspective, unresolved technical issues such as trailing slashes in URLs, incorrect use of canonical tags and missing alt text for images were further hindering their ability to reach their audience effectively.

Our primary goal was to restore and enhance the functionality of the Wessex Internet website. Addressing the Salesforce integration issue was critical to improving lead generation and revenue potential. From an SEO perspective, we aimed to eliminate technical barriers, optimise the site for search engines and improve its performance in rankings.

Building the Solution

We understood that the success of this project relied on establishing good communication with Wessex Internet. Armed with a deep understanding of their pain points, we began conducting a thorough audit of their website and digital ecosystem.

We addressed the Salesforce integration that was preventing a seamless flow of lead data, by reconfiguring the integration to ensure accurate and timely data transfer. This alignment between their website and Salesforce not only resolved the immediate challenge but also laid the groundwork for a more customer-centric lead management process.

On the SEO front, our work involved technical optimisation. By removing trailing slashes, implementing correct canonical URLs to avoid duplicate content and enabling alt text for images, we eliminated the structural inefficiencies that were holding back their rankings. These changes allowed search engines to better understand and prioritise their content, making it easier for potential customers to find them online.

To deliver this project, we used Umbraco, .NET, and Salesforce. Google Search Console also became an essential tool for monitoring the progress and performance of our efforts. This blend of platforms ensured that we could address both the immediate technical challenges and their long-term digital strategy needs.

Delivering Measurable Results

The impact of our work was both immediate and far-reaching. Within a short time of taking over the website, Wessex Internet began to see a marked improvement in their digital performance. Google Search Console reported a 21% increase in clicks from Google searches. Traffic to the homepage grew by 18%, while the careers page experienced an impressive 55% increase in traffic.

Perhaps the most significant achievement was the improvement in their average position in search query rankings, which climbed to an outstanding 1.2. These results translated into tangible business outcomes. With their Salesforce integration now functioning as intended, Wessex Internet could capture and act on leads with greater efficiency. The improved SEO performance also meant they were reaching their audience faster, driving more qualified traffic to their site and boosting their revenue potential.

Looking Ahead

While the results so far have been encouraging, our journey with Wessex Internet is far from over. We are preparing to upgrade their website from Umbraco 8 to Umbraco 13. With version 8 nearing its end of life, this transition to the next long-term support model is essential for maintaining security, performance and scalability.

This upgrade will involve a comprehensive rebuild, moving from the .NET Framework to .NET Core. This shift will not only future-proof their website but also unlock new capabilities, enabling Wessex Internet to stay ahead in a competitive digital landscape. Throughout this process, we will continue to prioritise open communication and collaboration, ensuring the transition is seamless and aligned with their business goals.
